Bank Reconciliations, Pivot Tables and More!

While mentoring, I had the opportunity to shadow an accountant for a couple of hours. She showed me how to reconcile bank statements, input the information into excel spreadsheets and post a journal entry. I was so captivated!

At one point, she showed me how to creat a pivot table. Oh my goodness! I think pivot tables are the best things since sliced bread! The way that they can sort information is amazing. Truth be told, I texted my brother, who is in the finance field, immediately afterwards just to talk to him about pivot tables and excel. As soon as I was near my computer, I created my own set of data and attempted to make one! I definitely need some practice, but I am just so fascinated by the things that excel can do.

As I was observing, I noticed that every single thing she did could be checked. By 'be checked', I mean that it could be verified by checking other numbers and documents. For example, if accounts balanced (had an equal number of credits and debits), then she knew that what she had done to the excel spreadsheets was correct! That is definitely one of my favorite parts of accounting. As the employee I was mentoring said, "there are no gray areas, everything is black and white."

I had such a good time shadowing and I am so privileged to have the ability to see accounting hands on. I truly love it.
